Barbie The Dream House Experience

She’s all moved in—glamorous outfits neatly organized in the closet, glittery eyeshadows displayed on the dressing room table, flowers blooming on the terrace, cupcakes in the oven. And everything, everywhere, pink.

Barbie The Dreamhouse Experience opens Friday, Feb. 14 at Mall of America, the first of several exhibits that will occupy the mall’s new Events Center on the third floor of the southeast court. I got a sneak peek today, as final tweaks were being made to the sprawling, walk-through exhibition.

This Barbie experience draws heavily on Barbie’s web series, so if you have not played with the toy industry’s most famous blonde since she became an Internet darling, you might feel a bit out of the target demo. There are more than 300 dolls in all manner of costume on display, but they aren’t labeled with the details and history that would appeal to collectors. It’s a telling oversight, as the exhibit plays to young girls, with a table for coloring, costumes for playing dress up, and a stage for performing. There are interactive screens with games, a kitchen with drawers to pull and buttons to press, and sets designed for selfies. Plan on around 45 minutes to explore Barbie’s entire “house”—a big fan could easily linger. Of course there’s also store selling Barbie dolls and accessories, and a Barbie Cafe with snacks and drinks. Birthday party packages are available.

Then there’s the matter of the admission price, which may give you pause. It’s $23.99 per person ($16.99 for seniors; 2 and under are free). That feels steep—particularly if you’re not visiting with a young one, nor a big fan of Internet Age Barbie.
